Summer and winter adjustment of PVC joinery

PVC windows are becoming an increasingly popular choice among homeowners and apartment owners. Their numerous advantages, including energy efficiency and durability, make them ideal for anyone who wants to modernize their space. In this article, we will consider in detail everything you need to know about PVC windows, including how to choose and maintain them.
Setting PVC windows and doors to summer or winter mode allows optimal insulation and comfort throughout the year. It is about adjusting the pressure by which the window sash is pressed against the frame, which adjusts the transparency and thermal insulation in accordance with the outside temperatures.

The fittings we install on the joinery are from high-quality and renowned manufacturers, so they offer the possibility of fixing the joinery and adjusting the brakes to the so-called SUMMER and WINTER modes. Namely, the brakes can be adjusted to different positions in order to obtain the appropriate pressure of the wing on the fixed frame or stem.

Is it necessary to do it immediately after the installed carpentry?

It is not necessary because the brakes are factory set to seal sufficiently and the joinery to seal well. Stelting can be done after a couple of years when the tires on the profiles have softened a little.

For cold winter days, we can set the brakes to press the wing against the stem more strongly, and for warmer days, we can adjust the brakes so that they do not exert much pressure on the wing on the stem.

What is the difference between summer and winter mode?

  • Summer mode (March–November):

A weaker fit of the wings on the frame allows for easier opening and closing, better air circulation and relief of the mechanisms. This mode saves tires and extends the life of the window.

  • Winter mode (December–March):

Stronger adhesion of the window sash provides more efficient thermal insulation, prevents the penetration of cold air and helps to save energy. It also reduces the risk of condensation and mold.

 

How to check the current setting?

Quick paper test:

  1. Close the window so that the sheet of paper remains between the sash and the frame.
  2. Try pulling out the paper:
  • If it comes out easily - the window is in summer mode.
  • If it tightens or tears - the window is in winter mode.

 

How is the regime changed?

  1. Open the window all the way.
  2. On the side of the sash (at the lock or hardware) find the eccentric fastener, usually a circular metal roller.
  3. Take an Allen key (usually 4 mm) and rotate:
  • 🔄 Inward (stronger pressure) = winter mode
  • 🔄 Outward (less pressure) = summer mode

 

Useful tips

  • Do not keep the windows in winter mode all year round, this puts a strain on the fittings and accelerates the wear of the rubber gaskets.
  • It is recommended to lubricate moving parts at least once a year.
  • The adjustment is simple, but if you are not sure, consult a craftsman or the manufacturer.
